What’s Your Sentence?

It’s always a good time to reflect on your intentions, goals, and habits. Are you on the right track or is it time for a reset? During my routine exploration of inspirational content, I stumbled upon an intriguing episode of Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday Interviews featuring Daniel Pink.

In his bestseller, “DRIVE”, Pink shares an insightful story about Clare Booth Luce, a groundbreaking writer and one of the first women to serve in the US Congress. During a 1962 meeting with then-president JFK, Luce voiced her concerns about JFK’s multifaceted approach to his presidency.

Luce’s wisdom was simple yet profound: “A great man is one sentence.”

Consider President Lincoln: “He preserved the union and freed the slaves.” Reflect on FDR: “He lifted us out of a great depression and helped us win a world war.” Luce challenged JFK with this thought-provoking question: What would be his sentence?

This single question is a powerful exercise in focus, clarity, and commitment. To unearth your deepest motivations, ask yourself: “What’s my sentence?” Use this sentence as a compass, guiding you throughout your life journey.

But wait, there’s more…

Complementing your sentence, there’s a second question you must ask to stay aligned with your purpose. Before you turn in each night, ponder: “Was I better today than yesterday?” If the answer is ‘no,’ awaken the next morning with a renewed resolve to live your sentence to its fullest.

Here’s my sentence: “I teach people how to communicate clearly, congruently, compassionately, and courageously within a container of curiosity.”

What is your sentence? Please feel free to share it in the comments below. It’s fascinating to learn how we all encapsulate our purpose in life into a single, powerful statement. It not only helps us stay true to our path but also inspires others to find their sentence.

Let’s continue this dialogue, encouraging each other to stay focused and committed to our unique paths. As we share our sentences, we might just inspire someone else to discover their own.
